Safe Access Solutions at Wellingborough

WTL were appointed by Galliford Try to construct three new access stairways on the Midland Main Line at Wellingborough. The project began in April 2019 and was completed by June 2020.

Project Scope

The stairways were required to provide safe access to a new flyover bridge, allowing maintenance teams and trackside operatives to move safely from the cess to the top of the embankment

Our Approach

The embankment was first graded using JCB excavators. Each stairway was then set out in sections, with concrete-poured landings used to maintain the correct elevation. The steps were constructed using engineering bricks laid on edge, finished with 500mm x 500mm concrete pavers for durability and stability.

Finishing Works

To complete the works, a preformed galvanised key clamp handrail system was installed from top to bottom of each stairway, providing a continuous and secure guide for operatives.

Outcome

The stairways were delivered to a high standard, offering long-term, safe, and practical access for railway staff working around the new bridge and embankment.
