Protecting Slopes at Normanton

WTL returned to Normanton near Wakefield following earlier vegetation clearance works completed in 2019. After the embankment had been regraded and hydro-seeded by a specialist contractor, we were tasked with installing an erosion control blanket to stabilise the slope.

Our Approach

Using 300mm wooden pins supplied by the manufacturer, we rolled out the erosion control blanket with a 75mm overlap to ensure full coverage. At the crest of the embankment, our team excavated a150mm x 150mm anchor trench with a 1.5t JCB. This trench secured the blanket firmly at the top edge, preventing slippage and ensuring long-term performance

Safe Access & Installation

Our operatives hold IRATA Level 1, 2, and 3 rope access qualifications, enabling safe setup and movement across the steep slope. Working from ropes, the team rolled and pinned the blanket in place with precision. The combination of rope access skills with vegetation management training, including chainsaw and brush cutter use, highlights WTL’s ability to deliver complex works safely and efficiently

Outcome

The completed works provided a strong erosion control solution, protecting the regraded slope and supporting the client’s long-term maintenance strategy.
