Strength in a Crisis – Corby Works

Severe weather conditions recently made national news when a large slope failure at Corby blocked both the north and southbound railway lines. At around 4pm, a northbound train ran directly into the landslip and was brought to a halt. As the ground continued to slip away, it became clear that the train could not be moved safely. The situation was further complicated by deep flooding along the tracks, preventing all services from passing through.

Our Response

WTL were called in at short notice to deliver an emergency solution that would stabilise the ground and allow works to continue safely. Our team quickly constructed shuttering using concrete pans around the top of the affected ground piles.

To reinforce the structure, we built a network of steel rebar, tied and set in place, before filling the shuttering with poured concrete. Once hardened, spoil was carefully graded against the new retaining structure to provide added strength and support.

Finishing Works

After completing the structural repairs, we reinstated the boundary security by replacing the palisade fencing. This ensured that the site was left safe, secure, and ready for ongoing rail operations.

The emergency works were delivered efficiently under challenging conditions, with safety at the forefront of every stage

Outcome

The finished slab was delivered on schedule, providing a strong and stable base for the new Coal Yard buildings. Despite the challenges of contaminated spoil removal and unexpected ground conditions, the project was completed within the original two-week timeframe.
